In 2003, during a casual conversation among a small group of musicians, the question was asked: "Why doesn't Kansas City have a resident chamber music series?" Shortly after that, they set out to answer that question, and the Chamber Music Society of Kansas City was born. The aim was to present mixed instrumental chamber music that spanned the entirety of music history, utilizing some of the top musicians in the area. The debut concert, which had to be cancelled because of an ice storm, was to feature six original founding members, and was scheduled for January 2004. It finally happened later that Spring, and since then, the Society and its friends have steadily grown.
The musicians of the Chamber Music Society of Kansas City are among the most prominent in their fields, holding professional posts in Kansas City, nationally, and internationally. The concerts have taken place in venues across the metropolitan area, including downtown Kansas City, Overland Park, and Prairie Village, Kansas.
The Chamber Music Society of Kansas City serves a multi-fold purpose; while providing a high quality musical experience to the audiences of Kansas City comprised of works from the Baroque to the Modern, it exposes concert-goers to music that is rarely performed. the programs are diverse, using various combinations of instruments and musicians on any given program. The Society has also partnered with other musical organizations to serve the community with an educational component, and has presented concerts on series outside the Kansas City area, serving small communities in Kansas and Missouri.
